This is the once-in-a-decade election to protect women’s rights and reproductive freedom.
The question is no longer if Roe v. Wade will be overturned, but when. The six anti-choice judges on the U.S. Supreme Court have made the 2022 election the most important one for reproductive rights in 50 years. Here in Illinois, the 2022 election will determine the fate of legal abortion in the post-Roe era through 2033. This is because all legislative districts will have been redrawn, and ALL 177 House and Senate seats (and more!) will be up for election. On top of this, there are critical races for the Illinois Supreme Court where we are just one seat away from losing a pro-choice majority. And it’s our job to protect women’s rights.
More abortion restrictions have been enacted across the U.S. in 2021 than in any previous years—particularly in states with anti-choice Governors. You’ve likely seen the headlines, but here are just a few of the state restrictions that Illinois will face if we are not successful in 2022:
- Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed the most restrictive abortion ban into law which prohibits abortion at the point of fertilization.
- Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a new measure into law that bans abortions as early as six weeks (often before most women even know they’re pregnant). The bill also bans abortions that are the result of rape or incest.
- Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson signed a bill requiring that individuals seeking abortion receive an ultrasound with the image displayed and a simultaneous verbal description of the fetus from the provider.
- Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a provision that allows providers to refuse to perform health care services on the basis of religious beliefs.
In the post-Roe era, the only way to protect women’s rights and reproductive rights in Illinois is to elect pro-choice candidates to the Illinois General Assembly and Illinois Supreme Court, and then hold them accountable.

We must prepare for the 2022 election to maintain our vulnerable pro-choice majority and to protect women’s rights. We need to (re)elect pro-choice champions, including Illinois’ only pro-choice candidate for Governor in 2022 – JB Pritzker.
